持続可能な健康と環境の共生、消費行動を両立する新しいウェルネスの定義（日本で初のヘルスツ―リズム論講義開始、ウェルネスツーリズム研究教育開発、新しいウェルネスの定義開発（荒川,2017））を行ってきた琉球大学国際地域創造学部ウェルネス研究分野では、持続可能な開発目標SDGs、ESG投資、企業の社会的責任投資（SRI）等の対象と重なり大きく世界市場成長トレンドにあるウェルネス産業の産官学連携による研究開発を進めています。▶ SDGsウォッシュ、スローガンに終わらぬよう、国家、世界、地球規模（アウトサイド）の大上段から構えて取り組むのではなく、人の体内環境は地球の一部であり、まずは自分の体内環境整備から始めること、ウェルネスとは「環境の一部である内なる健康環境と外なる自然・地域・社会環境の持続可能を志向し、より健康に、美しく、人生を豊かに彩るライフスタイルを実践すること」とし、内なる環境（インサイド）からの持続可能な開発を考える「インサイド・アウト」視点を持つことが自然であり実践しやすい『ウェルネスSDGs』を社会提案しています (Arakawa,2021)。自身の持続可能な健康、美、生き方を追求する、自分を愛すること、その小さな1歩は、世界を変える大きな１歩であり、自然と無理なく＝持続可能なSDGsアクションそのものになります。
▶スロー（ライフ）、エコ（環境保全）、オーガニック、ヨガ、クリーンエネルギー、地産地消、環境共生のウェルネス志向層は、理想論でなく、現代社会に必要不可欠な「経済」「消費」概念を伴いつつサステナビリティ（持続可能性）志向と行動実践を両立する層であり、SDGsに最も感度の高い人口層です。当ウェルネス研究分野では、アジアゲートウェイ沖縄を実践と生きた学びのフィールドと位置づけ、観光関連事業者はもとより、島嶼地域に根差し資源の活用と保全に熟知した地域（資源・企業・人・コミュニティ）と直接結びつき、地域資源を「ウェルネス資源」という新しい価値を地域プレーヤーと協働で生み出していく持続可能な開発プロジェクトを多数遂行しています。地元の1次、2次産業企業との連携を必須のスキームとし、真正を求める顧客に真正を伝える高付加価値型産業へのシフト、収益県外移転を抑制する課題解決に取り組んでいます。
【ウェルネスSDGs研究テーマ】：サステナブルを基盤としたウェルネスメニュー開発、ウェルネスツーリズム開発、次世代ライフスタイル、ウェルネス文化、ウェルネスまちづくり、SPA、温泉、ヘルスケア、予防医療、長寿、世界5大長寿地域、ブルーゾーン（Blue Zones）、アンチエイジング、オーガニック、スローフード、エコライフ、クリーンエネルギー、ウェルネス保険金融、ウェルネス不動産など成長著しい分野をテーマに国内外企業との共同研究、メニュー開発監修、全国市町村との連携を多数おこなっています。
