肯定極性項目(PPI)は通常、否定の直接作用域にある解釈を受けられないが、特定の環境においてはそのような解釈が可能であることが知られている。その解釈が可能な時、PPIは「救出」されたと言われるが、Szabolcsi(2004)は、英語のsomeタイプのPPIに関して、PPI救出現象は、弱い否定極性項目(weak NPI)が認可される環境において見られることを明らかにしている。本稿では、まず、Szabolcsiのこの一般化が日本語のPPIについてもあてはまることを示す。次に、日本語の「～なら」条件文がこの一般化の例外になることを示し、Szabolcsiの一般化の修正を提案する。すなわち、弱いNPIの認可条件としてSzabolcsiが採用している下方含意(DE) を改め、Giannakidou(1998, 2006)が提案する非真実性(nonveridicality)をもとにした認可条件を採用する。こうして「～なら」条件文においてPPI救出が行われないことに対する説明が与えられる。最後に、一見したところこれまでの分析に対する反例になると思われる例文について、NPIは否定の含意の存在によっても認可される場合があるというGiannakidou(2006)の主張をここでも採用することにより、一応の説明が可能であることを示す。 （管理者追加）リポジトリ登録情報を移行しました。確認のうえ、加除修正をしてください。

本稿の目的は、ラーディル語と現代ヘブライ語の特定の音韻データに関する最適性理論による分析を提示し、規則に基づく音韻理論による分析と比較してみることである。規則に基づく音韻理論では、これらのデータを説明するためには音韻規則の外在的な順序づけが必要であるとされてきた。そのような規則は個別言語的であり、音韻理論において普遍性を探る際の大きな障害になっていたように思われる。 一方、1990年代に台頭してきた最適性理論は音韻論においても普遍性を前面に押し出し、各言語に見られる様々な音韻現象は普遍的な制約とその適切なランクづけによって説明することができると主張している。そこで、規則の外在的順序づけが必要とされていたラーディル語や現代ヘブライ語のデータを最適性理論の枠組みの中でうまく説明できるかどうか考察してみた。 その結果、最適性理論ではそれらのデータが正しく記述できるばかりではなく、規則に基づく音韻理論では捕えることのできない一般的性質が捕えられることもあることが示された。しかしここで提案された制約のいくつかは普遍的であるとは考えにくく、それらをより普遍的な制約で置き換えることができるかどうかは今後の課題である。 （管理者追加）リポジトリ登録情報を移行しました。確認のうえ、加除修正をしてください。

A Review of the History of Constraints in the Pre-Minimalist Transformational Generative Grammar

チョムスキーの極小主義プログラムが世に問われて以来、変形生成文法の研究の傾向にも大きな変動があった。極小主義以前盛んに研究されていた島の制約に代表されるような統語的制約については、極小理論では目覚ましい展開がこれまでなかったと言っていいであろう。そこで、極小主義の枠組みでそれらの制約を考える際の参考に供するため、本研究ノートでは極小主義以前の理論で統語的制約がどのように研究され発展してきたのかを概観してみた。 要約すると以下のとおりである。Chomsky（1964）は変形操作を制約する原理の存在を主張し、それは後にA-over-A原理と呼ばれるようになった。A-over-A原理に触発されRoss（1967）はその後の研究に重大な影響を与える制約群（ロスの制約）を提唱した。その成果を受けChomsky（1973）は下接の条件を提案し、ロスの制約のいくつかが統合可能であることを示した。その後Chomsky（1981）によって空範疇原理（ECP）が提案され、移動の結果生じる痕跡に関わる重要な制約として認識されるに至った。Kayne（1981）はECPを修正し下接の条件の大部分をECPに包含することを提案したが、Huang(1982）らの批判を受け、下接の条件は存続することになった。Huang（1982）は抽出領域条件（CED）を提案したが、CEDと下接の条件の間に見られる重複性の問題が課題として残った。その重複性を克服するためにChomsky（1986）は、下接の条件における境界節点の定義を環境に依存するものに変更し、障壁という概念が誕生した。これにより下接の条件がCEDを包含することになった。その結果、極小主義移行直前のチョムスキー派の変形生成文法理論においては、下接の条件やECPが移動にかかる制約として残され、それらが束縛原理やθ-基準等と「共謀」して移動操作を拘束するという状況を呈していた。 （管理者追加）リポジトリ登録情報を移行しました。確認のうえ、加除修正をしてください。

A Note on a PSG Account of the Tough-construction in Japanese

This paper aims to demonstrate that the Phrase Structure Grammar (PSG) account of the English tough-construction presented by Jacobson (1984) can be successfully adopted to account for the syntactic properties of the Japanese tough-construction. The tough-constructions in both languages exhibit the same case-marking pattern. This case-marking pattern can be correctly described by positing a rule that sanctions a ""free gap."" After reviewing Jacobson's account of the English tough-construction in section 1, I will show in section 2 that Jacobson's insights can be employed to correctly derive the Japanese tough-sentences, including those containing double objects and complex sentences. Section 3 discusses how word-order variation in Japanese can be described in the PSG framework. 本稿の目的は、Chomsky（1998）によって提示された最近の極小主義プログラムの枠組みを基本的に使って、英語の迂言的助動詞doの分布に関して原理的な説明を与えることである。迂言的助動詞doは、否定文や疑問文に現れるが、疑問文においては、埋め込み疑問文には現れず、母型wh-疑問文でもwh句が主語の場合には現れない。このような事実に対し、以下のような制約または仮定を設けることにより、統一的な説明ができることを示したい。 （1）主節の時制素性の一つは、音韻的に明示的な主要部に含まれていなければならない。（“The Matrix Tense Condition”） （2）英語の疑問文は、解釈可能な［Ｑ］素性を持つwh句またはOpのいずれかの演算子を必ず含んでいなければならない。 （3）解釈可能な［Ｑ］素性には、wh疑問素性の［Ｑ_<wh>］と、yes-no疑問素性の［Ｑ_<y-n>］の2種類ある。 （4）ある節が疑問文として解釈されるためには、解釈可能な［Ｑ］素性を持つ句が、その節の中で階層的に最も高い位置になければならない。（“The［Ｑ］Legibility Condition”） （5）補文標識のwhetherとifは、解釈不可能な［Ｑ_<y-n>」素性を持つ。この素性は、解釈可能な［Ｑ_<y-n>］素性を持つOpによって削除されなければならない。 （6）音韻的に空の疑問補文標識Ｃは、解釈不可能な［Ｑ_<wh>］を持ち、この素性は、wh句の持つ解釈可能な［Ｑ_<wh>］によって削除きれなければならない。 これらと、他の補助的な仮定を採用することで、迂言的助動詞ｄｏの分布について説明が与えられると思われる。 （管理者追加）リポジトリ登録情報を移行しました。確認のうえ、加除修正をしてください。

On the VP-Internal Subject Hypothesis in Japanese

The goal of this paper is to demonstrate that the so-called VP-internal subject hypothesis for Japanese must be reinterpreted as vP-internal subject hypothesis. I will first review Tateishi's (1994) arguments which convincingly show that the subject in Japanese must typically be generated outside VP. This conclusion is apparently at odds with the conclusion I reached in Yoshimoto (1998). However, I will argue that once we recognize the existence of vP, a maximal projection of a light verb that takes VP as its complement, the apparent conflict between Tateishi's conclusion and my conclusion disappears. VP Coordination and Tense Feature Checking in English and Japanese

In VP coordination structures of Japanese, the verbs in the conjoined VPs are all tenseless except for the final verb. In English VP coordination structures, all the verbs in the conjoined VPs can be tensed. This paper aims to provide a principled explanation for this curious difference between English and Japanese. Our account crucially utilizes the notion of feature checking within the framework of Chomsky's (1995) Minimalist Program. I suggest that tense features are not chosen when Japanese verbs enter the numeration, whereas they are optionally chosen when English verbs enter the numeration. In a nutshell, our claim is that the difference we are interested in stems from the absence of tense feature checking in Japanese, and the presence thereof in English.
