     概要を見る

King Shō Iku (r.1835-47) designated his oldest son, Shō Shun, as the crown prince (Prince of Nakagusuku). However, because Shō Shun died young before the enthronement could take place, difficulties arose concerning his memorial rites, which include how King Shō Iku and his second son, the next king, should enshrine the deceased heir to the throne, whether the priest should conduct the rites at the royal family’s separate temple, Tenkai-ji, and whether the deceased should be enshrined at Enkaku-ji, where the royal ancestral temple was located. The Shuri Royal Government gathered a council of officials from Kume Village and Shuri, along with teachers from the highest learning institution in the Ryukyu, to deliberate on these issues. They referred to the protocols and family rites of China’s successive dynasties to bolster their respective opinions. The “lower seat” presented its own policy to the “upper seat” while also presenting the submitted findings. Deliberations proceeded based on precedents and records. In matters concerning institutions that received a strong Chinese influence, such as ancestral temples, a wide variety of classical Chinese text were consulted and excerpted in memorandums and other documents. According to Confucian principles, the ancestral temple of the lords for venerating ancestors and successive rulers consisted of five temples. In early modern Ryukyu, the first king Shō En, the founder of the second Shō Dynasty, was enshrined at the immovable central position of an ancestral temple within a Buddhist temple, Enkaku-ji, along with four generations of spiritual tablets, including the current king’s closest relatives. As a result, the Shuri Royal Government decided to enshrine Shō Shun not at Enkaku-ji, but at Tenkai-ji, which are for members of the royal family without heirs. This paper examined the original Chinese texts that were cited as references in the deliberations and identified the passages that determined the Royal Government’s policy based on Shō-Boku (Zhao-Mu) order, which is the basic principle of Chinese ancestral rituals. Under this principle, if the father is Shō, the son is Mu, and this distinction repeats thereafter. The order of succession does not determine who is enshrined in the royal ancestral temple; rather, it is determined by the number of generations. There were differing opinions on this principle, necessitating the establishment of policies based on classical Chinese texts. The enshrinement of Crown Prince Shō Shun at Tenkai-ji is a measure linked to distinguishing between kings and royal family members who were not direct descendants of kings and their successors (those who were crown princes but died before their fathers, with their sons becoming kings). This action holds historical significance as part of the process for establishing a consistent system concerning the ancestral temples.
