View Summary

Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy(NIRS)was used to predict chemical composition of rhodesgrass (200 samples from five cultivars). The results indicated that moisture, CP, NDFom, ADFom, ADL and IVDMD contents in rhodesgrass can be predicted by using NIRS techniques with an ac- ceptable accuracy.

     View Summary

The objective of this study was to evaluate environmental impacts of a year-round-grazing fattening system in a subtropical region, Okinawa, Japan, using the life cycle assessment (LCA). The fattening system for Japanese Brown steers was an intensive rotational grazing with by-product feeds (brewers grain and broken rice) as total mixed rations (TMR). The functional unit was set to be 1 kg of body weight gain. Impact categories considered were energy consumption, global warming, acidification and eutrophication. The result of LCA showed that the use of by-product feeds reduced the environmental impacts from feed production and transportation, and that the pasture management had a large environmental impact on all the impact categories due to a large amount of fertilizer application for achieving high productivity in grazing fattening. Moreover, three different by-product allocation approaches were compared; economic allocation, mass allocation and no allocation as wastes. The result indicated that mass allocation approach estimated a larger environmental impact on energy consumption than economic allocation and no allocation approaches.
