Although research on coral diseases is increasing worldwide, it remains limited in Taiwan. Taiwan is located at the Tropic of Cancer and contains both tropical and subtropical reefs. We conducted spatial and cross-seasonal surveys in Taiwan in 2018 and identified 7 types of disease and nondisease lesions and 6 potential factors influencing coral health. The overall mean prevalence of disease and nondisease lesions varied considerably across the reef regions, and host susceptibility differed among the coral taxa. The overall mean prevalence of disease and nondisease lesions was highest in Kenting (mean ± SEM: 8.58 ± 1.81%) and lowest on the Southern Islands (2.12 ± 0.73%). Although the prevalence of diseases did not differ significantly between the seasons, cyanobacteria-related diseases—including black band disease (BBD), BBD-like syndrome, and other cyanobacterial syndromes—were slightly more prevalent in autumn than in spring. Furthermore, 3 of the potential factors influencing coral health (i.e. turf algae, bioeroding sponges, and coral bleaching) were strong predictors of disease and nondisease lesion prevalence. These results advance our understanding of coral disease ecology in Taiwan and highlight the need for further research on the correlations between diseases, hosts, and environment.

Endolithic microbes in coral reefs may act as a nutrient source for their coral hosts. Increasing atmospheric CO₂ concentrations are causing ocean acidification (OA), which may affect marine organisms and ecosystems, especially calcifying organisms such as reef-building corals. However, knowledge of how OA affects marine microbes remains limited, and little research has been done on how coral endolithic communities respond to shifting environmental baselines. In this study, the endolithic communities of two common shallow water coral species, <italic>Isopora palifera</italic> and <italic>Porites lobata</italic>, were examined to investigate the microbial community dynamics under OA treatments. The colonies were placed in an environment with a partial pressure of carbon dioxide (<italic>p</italic>CO₂) of 1,000 or 400 ppm (control) for 2 months. Several <italic>I. palifera</italic> colonies bleached and died at 1,000 ppm <italic>p</italic>CO₂, but the <italic>P. lobata</italic> colonies remained unaffected. Inversely, the endolithic community in <italic>P. lobata</italic> skeletons showed significant changes after OA treatment, whereas no significant dynamics were observed among the <italic>I. palifera</italic> endoliths. Our findings suggest that the skeletal structures of different coral species may play a key role in corals host and endoliths under future high-OA scenarios.

Designing a preoperative tissue engineering vascular graft (TEVG) that is immunologically compatible with the host is one of the goals of vascular tissue engineering. Angiogenesis is an important early step in wound healing, and the three-dimensional formation of capillaries using scaffold contributes greatly to the success of bone regeneration therapy. In this study, aragonite particles derived from exoskeleton of Montipora digitata (a kind of hard coral) as a scaffold of TEVG were applied to three-dimensional culture of normal human dermal skin fibroblasts and normal human umbilical cord vein endothelial cells, and the effect was observed morphologically. As a result, the particles promoted cell proliferation and capillary differentiation three-dimensionally in vitro. Also, incorporation of calcium from the aragonite particles into co-cultured normal human dermal skin fibroblasts and normal human umbilical vein endothelial cells was observed. Thus, aragonite particles were inferred to be a useful scaffold for 3 dimensional capillary culture.

<p>Corals having unicellular algae (zooxanthellae) grow faster with the aid of symbiotic zooxanthellae living within their animal cells. Wax esters and triacylglycerol function as a storage lipids in coral. Roughly coral soft tissues contain 30% lipids in dried weight. Recent higher water temperature due to global warming causes loss of symbiotic algae from the host coral (we call as coral bleaching), and then coral itself consume storage lipids. Similarly, loss of storage lipids has been observed in diseased (skeletal anomalies, or tumor) coral tissue. These suggest that storage lipids have an important role to regulate coral homeostasis and assume environment condition of coral reefs.</p>

<p>We have been studying and developing an underwater robot for coral reef conservation. This paper describes the development of an acetic acid injection device mounted on an underwater robot for use in exterminating crown-of-thorns starfish that damage corals. First, we outlined the ecology and morphology of the crown-of-thorns starfish to identify requirements for the acetic acid injection device. Based on the requirements identified, we designed and prototyped an acetic acid injection device to be installed on an underwater robot. Next, we installed the developed injection device on a remotely operated vehicle and injected acetic acid into crown-of-thorns starfish under water. We describe the effectiveness of this acetic acid injection device for exterminating crown-of-thorns starfish. The experimental results prove that the developed acetic acid injection device can inject acetic acid into crown-of-thorns starfish just as intended, and that an underwater robot installed with such device can be used effectively to aid in the extermination of crown-of-thorns starfish.</p>
