  • WEB-based BP data delivey system improved qualty of life and BP contorol in elderly who lives in remote islands in Okinawa.

    Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research(C)

    Project Year: 2015.04  -  2018.03

    Investigator(s): Yusuke Ohya

Direct: 3,700,000 (YEN)  Overheads: 4,810,000 (YEN)  Total: 1,110,000 (YEN)

     View Summary

Most elderly are not familiar with information and communication technology(ICT), applications of ICT-based monitoring to elderly are limited. We used the home BP measurement device with automated transfer function via the internet to elderly who lived in seven remote islands in Okinawa (n=230, mean age; male 72 yeas old, female 80 years old). Support by health professionals enhanced their continuation of blood pressure (BP) measurement, while living alone was related with discontinuation. Use of the device did not change mean values of BP, but BP levels who had not known the importance of BP measurement before this projects decreased significantly. Use of the device improved the secure feeling of subjects and their families who lived afar. These results suggest that ICT-based BP self monitoring improved BP control and improved secure feeling of subjects and their families, but contribution of health professionals is also important.

  • Traditional Okinawan diet and non-pharmacological therapy for hypertension

    Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research(C)

    Project Year: 2013.04  -  2016.03

    Investigator(s): Sakima Atsushi, TODOROKI HIDEMI

Direct: 2,400,000 (YEN)  Overheads: 3,120,000 (YEN)  Total: 720,000 (YEN)

     View Summary

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of information strategy of traditional Okinawan diet on non-pharmacological therapy for hypertension. The 140 Okinawan patients with non-communicable disease including hypertension were recruited for the study. The information strategy significantly decreased estimated sodium intake. Although systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP) did not alter significantly, average values of BPs were achieved target BP levels and no study related adverse effects were observed during the periods. The data indicate that the information strategy of dietary approach is useful to improve lifestyle modification including low sodium diet and blood pressure control in hypertension.

  • Intervention study on three generations by traditional Okinawan diet with consideration of socio-economic factors

    Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research(B)

    Project Year: 2013.04  -  2016.03

    Investigator(s): TODORIKI HIDEMI

Direct: 14,400,000 (YEN)  Overheads: 18,720,000 (YEN)  Total: 4,320,000 (YEN)

     View Summary

The purpose of this study was to determine intervention effect of food education and traditional Okinawan diet recipe for school children and their guardians on dietary health promotion. This study design was crossover intervention study with 4 elementary schools in the southern Okinawa prefecture. Changes in dietary intake and nutrition knowledges were measured before and after intervention. In the low score group of family functions, the increase in the correct answer rate of the nutrition knowledges was higher than that of the control group after intervention. Some family styles factors such as family conversation between child and guardians increased the nutritional knowledge of the child, indirectly promoting the intake of vegetables.
