<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>The West Indian sweetpotato weevil, Euscepes postfasciatus (Fairmaire), is one of the pests of the sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas, in tropical and subtropical countries. Although an eradication program using the sterile insect technique (SIT) for this weevil is now underway in Japan, the lack of potent attractants such as sex pheromones for this weevil species prevents effective monitoring and hampers pest control operations. New methods to monitor the performance of sterile males using trapped wild females are needed. In this study, we tested whether the ejaculate of the labeled males that were fed an artificial diet labeled with the trace element, rubidium (Rb), is detectable in the fertilized females. We fed an artificial diet treated with Rb (1.00, 0.50, 0.25, and 0.00%) to adult male weevils for 14 d after emerging and quantified the rubidium content in inseminated females. We also examined the side effects of the artificial diet on mating performance and longevity. The advantages of monitoring the spatial level of sterility using data from females labeled with ejaculate of Rb-fed males in an SIT eradication program are discussed.</jats:p>

Evolutionary ecological theory suggests that selection arising from interactions with conspecifics, such as sexual and kin selection, may result in evolution of intraspecific conflicts and evolutionary 'tragedy of the commons'. Here, we propose that such an evolution of conspecific conflicts may affect population dynamics in a way that enhances species coexistence. Empirical evidence and theoretical models suggest that more abundant species is more susceptible to invasion of 'selfish' individuals that increase their own reproductive success at the expense of population growth (intraspecific adaptation load). The density-dependent intraspecific adaptation load gives rise to a self-regulation mechanism at the population level, and stabilizes species coexistence at the community level by negative frequency-dependence.

Idea paper: Airport ecology, an environment without predation pressure drives evolution

Evolutionary changes in organisms are directly observable, and they can occur rapidly in the presence of strong natural selection. Here, we present the "airport ecology" to describe the rapid evolution of animals. The pygmy grasshopperTetrix japonicaexhibits significant variations in pronotum color and markings and is a good model organism for "airport ecology." There are trade-offs in black-spot markings in the pygmy grasshoppers; although it helps in camouflaging and reducing predation pressure, it stimulates overheating, resulting in a reduction in mating opportunities and foraging success under high solar irradiance. Therefore, the frequency of black-spotted morphs is lower at lower latitudes than at higher latitudes along a latitudinal cline. However, in an airport where predation pressure is reduced by the removal of predatory bird populations, we predict that the frequency of black-spotted morphs ofT. japonicawill be lower in habitats without predators than in those with predators at the same latitude; this demonstrates the anthropogenic effect onT. japonicapolymorphism. As suggested here, predator-free environments such as airports are valuable for illustrating the effects of anthropogenic activity on animal evolution. These findings can be extended to several other species that are found around airports and are potentially preferred by avian predators in terms of not only rapid evolution of color polymorphism but also evolution of various life-history traits.

Evidence for frequency‐dependent selection maintaining polymorphism in the Batesian mimic Papilio polytes in multiple islands in the Ryukyus, Japan

Batesian mimicry is a well-studied adaptation for predation avoidance, in which a mimetic species resembles an unpalatable model species. Batesian mimicry can be under positive selection because of the protection gained against predators, due to resemblance to unpalatable model species. However, in some mimetic species, nonmimetic individuals are present in populations, despite the benefits of mimicry. The mechanism for evolution of such mimetic polymorphism remains an open question. Here, we address the hypothesis that the abundance of mimics is limited by that of the models, leading to mimetic polymorphism. In addition, other forces such as the effects of common ancestry and/or isolation by distance may explain this phenomenon. To investigate this question, we focused on the butterfly, Papilio polytes, that exhibits mimetic polymorphism on multiple islands of the Ryukyus, Japan, and performed field surveys and genetic analysis. We found that the mimic ratio of P. polytes was strongly correlated with the model abundance observed on each of the five islands, suggesting negative frequency-dependent selection is driving the evolution of polymorphism in P. polytes populations. Molecular phylogenetic analysis indicated that the southern island populations are the major source of genetic diversity, and the middle and northern island populations arose by relatively recent migration. This view was also supported by mismatch distribution and Tajima's D analyses, suggesting a recent population expansion on the middle and northern islands, and stable population persistence on the southern islands. The frequency of the mimetic forms within P. polytes populations is thus explained by variations in the model abundance rather than by population structure. Thus, we propose that predation pressure, rather than neutral forces, have shaped the Batesian mimicry polymorphism in P. polytes observed in the Ryukyus.

Servospheres are robotized observation equipments that produce endless fields for behavior observation of wandering animals. This paper first proposes a markerless visual tracking technique for estimation of the position and the heading direction of wandering animals, since existing techniques for servospheres require special markers or do not estimate the heading direction. The proposed markerless visual tracking technique is then integrated with a visual servo controller for a servosphere. The integrated markerless visual servo controller is available for wandering animals whose shapes in the image plane are represented by long bodies and thinner parts than their bodies. This paper demonstrates that the proposed controller is available for ants, crickets, mantises and spiders, while the shapes of their bodies and legs are different from each other.

Euscepes postfasciatus (Fairmaire) is an invasive pest of the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) and is also parasitic to other wild host plants of the Ipomoea genus. The population density of E. postfasciatus is sometimes greater in Ipomoea pes-caprae L. than in Ipomoea indica (Burm. f.). We investigated the desirability of I. pes-caprae as a host plant for E. postfasciatus in terms of reproductive and developmental potential. Females laid fewer eggs on I. pes-caprae, and the eclosion of their larvae was delayed compared with on I. indica. Furthermore, the larval growth rate was slower on I. pes-caprae than on I. indica. These results suggest that I. pes-caprae is not always the preferred host for egg laying and growth rate in the early developmental stages. However, the larval survival rate after the initial period of development was markedly better on I. pes-caprae than on I. indica. The present simulation study demonstrated that the population density of E. postfasciatus on I. pes-caprae overwhelmed that on I. indica over generations. Comparing the two wild host plant species, I. pes-caprae outweighs I. indica with respect to total population growth, but reproduction on I. indica may be advantageous for the colonization of the new habitat.

<p>Prevention or reduction of infection by the neogregarine parasite <i>Farinocystis</i> sp. is indispensable for effective mass-production of the West Indian sweet potato weevil <i>Euscepes postfasciatus</i>（Fairmaire）. The established method of weevil collection, coercively drawing weevils from the larval rearing cage, was suspected to increase the risk of breaking infected individuals, which causes horizontal transmission of the parasite to uninfected individuals. Here, we developed a novel collection method in which the weevils were permitted to spontaneously leave the larval rearing cage. The significant decrease in infection rate and the significant increase in the fecundity of weevils collected by the novel method suggested that this method may improve the mass-production of weevils.</p>

<p>In the process of the mass rearing of West Indian sweet potato weevils <i>Euscepes postfasciatus</i> Fairmaire on an artificial diet, the eggs of the weevil are washed and disinfected before inoculation to remove the risk of infection by the neogregarine protozoan <i>Farinocystis</i> sp. However, protozoan infection was recently detected in this mass-rearing system. To identify the infection route, we conducted a detailed investigation of the occurrence of the <i>Farinocystis</i> sp. infecting the weevils in larval rearing and egg collection containers. In the larval rearing containers, the infection rates at 8 weeks after egg inoculation were 56.1% for larvae, 14.7% for pupae, and 1.5% for adults. Investigations of 130 rearing containers detected only 5 containers with absolutely no infection. In the egg collection container, the infection rate increased with the number of days elapsed in both sexes but the rate of increase was significantly higher for males. These findings suggested that the treatment was not sufficient to completely eliminate or deactivate the <i>Farinocystis</i> sp. in the larval rearing containers, causing contamination of infected weevils in the egg collecting containers and, possibly, subsequent horizontal infection.</p>

クラインは、生物の形質の進化や適応のメカニズムを検討可能な興味深い現象である。この現象には古くから多くの進化学者・生態学者が魅了され、さまざまな経験的一般則が発見されてきた。量的形質である体サイズや体重のクラインを扱ったベルクマンの法則は、その代表例である。ただし、これらの法則は、優れた視点を有すると同時に、その定義に曖昧な部分も多い。クラインとは空間的なパターンのことであるが、それを生み出すメカニズムは一つではない。それゆえ、観察された現象へ与えられる名称と、その現象を説明するメカニズムは、区別して扱われるべきである。しかしながら、現状ではこの点について混乱もある。ベルクマンの法則の適用範囲が拡大していく中で、アレンの法則や温度-サイズ則といった温度勾配を背景とした法則とベルクマンの法則との関連性および相違点を改めて確認し、整合性を与える必要も生じている。そのためには、量的形質のクラインが地理的な環境要因の勾配に応じた可塑的応答と、量的遺伝を基盤とした適応進化の地理的差異によって構成されることを再確認することが第一歩となる。本稿では、量的形質のクラインにおける基礎的な考えと量的形質のクラインに関する法則の問題点を整理することで、マクロな視点から生物の一般則を導く「クライン研究」がさらなる進展をするための基盤整備を目指す。

クラインは量的形質の形質値の空間変異として現れるばかりではなく、質的形質における多型の出現比(型比)の空間変異として観察されることもある。型比のクラインの多くは環境勾配に沿って現れるため、その成立機構は比較的簡単に想像できるよう感じる。すなわち、量的形質の地理的勾配と同様、環境が徐々に変化するために各型の有利さが徐々に変化し、形質の「比率」もなだらかなに変化すると解釈されることが少なくない。しかし、量的形質の地理勾配が生じるメカニズムをそのまま質的形質のケースに適用することには大きな理論的な問題がある。なぜなら、たとえば、A型とB型の2型が出現する種を想定した場合、空間に沿ってB型が有利になる環境条件からA型が有利になる条件に変化するならば、両型の適応度が完全に等しくなる平衡点を除き、どちらか一方の型の適応度が高くなるため、この状況が進化的スケールで充分な時間継続すれば、各集団には有利な型が蔓延するためである。つまり、各集団中には多型が共存し得ないので、空間に沿って平衡点を境に型比は階段状になる。このことは、逆に言えば、各集団に多型の共存を促進する機構があれば、型比のクラインが成立する可能性があることを示している。本稿では、多型の維持機構という視点から、あらゆる型比のクラインを理解するための枠組みを提案する。この枠組は、質的形質の比率のクラインにおける多型を維持する進化的原動力の重要性を明示するとともに、空間スケールの考慮の必要性を示すものである。集団遺伝学的視点を取り入れることを通じて、質的形質のクラインの成立機構の理解を正すとともに、クラインを利用した進化学・生態学研究の足場固めをしたい。

クラインとは、連続した生息地において量的形質や対立遺伝子頻度が示す空間的に滑らかな地理的変化をさし、測定可能な変異の勾配として観察される。クラインは、古くから数多くの生物において報告されてきた身近で関心の高い現象である。生態学や進化学では、注目している形質が示すクラインを利用し、その変異の時空間的変化を調べることで形質の適応進化の因果やプロセスを明らかにしてきた。ベルクマンの法則の発見をはじめとする種間・種内で認められる形質の地理的変異に関する数々の研究成果は、クラインの重要性を象徴している。しかし、数多くのクライン研究成果の基礎をなす「クラインそのものに対する理解」はいまだ混沌としており、クライン研究は脆弱な基盤によった砂上の楼閣といえる。その背景には、クラインを形成する「測定可能な性質」が異なるクラインに対する認識および解釈の混乱などが挙げられる。本稿では、クライン研究の体系的枠組み構築のため「質的クライン」と「量的クライン」という分類方法を提案する。
