The Japanese Journal of Personality ( Japan Society of Personality Psychology ) 30 ( 3 ) 161 - 163 2022.02 [ Peer Review Accepted ]

Type of publication: Research paper (scientific journal)

     View Summary

This study aimed to develop a Japanese version of the Adult Disorganized Attachment (ADA) scale for romantic relationships. The target of the analyses was 183 college students who had experienced romantic relationships. The study found that (a) adult attachment disorganization measured by the ADA consisted of one component and had sufficient internal consistency, and (b) adult attachment disorganization had a unique influence on aggression and depression, in addition to the effect of attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance. Therefore, the Japanese version of the ADA demonstrated adequate psychometric properties of reliability and validity.

  • Attachment, loneliness, and mental health of university students in Japan:

Type of publication: Research paper (scientific journal)

     View Summary

This study, using both the cross-lagged and synchronous effects models, examined the temporal and causal relationships between attachment and other critical psychological variables (loneliness, mental health) in university students under the restrictive conditions of campus activities due to COVID-19. The participants of the analysis were 150 university students (88 males, 62 females) who responded to two web surveys three months apart: one in early May 2020 and the other in late July or early August 2020. The main findings were: (a) AIC and BIC indicated that the cross-lagged effects model fit the data better than the synchronous effects model; (b) attachment anxiety had a negative cross-lagged effect on mental health three months later; and (c) loneliness had a positive cross-lagged effect on attachment avoidance three months later. This study's academic contribution was to extend the previous findings about the interrelationships over time in a potentially attachment-related threat situation, the COVID-19 pandemic, and to clarify whether attachment influences loneliness and mental health in this situation or vice versa.

  • Measuring Attachment Anxiety and Attachment Avoidance in Middle-Childhood: Japanese Adaptation of ECR-RS for Children

Nakao Tatsuma, Murakami Tatsuya, Kazui Miyuki

    The Japanese Journal of Personality ( Japan Society of Personality Psychology ) 27 ( 3 ) 179 - 189 2019 [ Peer Review Accepted ]

Type of publication: Research paper (scientific journal)

     View Summary

This study adapted the ECR-RS for children into Japanese, to measure attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance, and examined its reliability and validity. Participants were 260 boys and 280 girls in Grade 4–6 (mean age=10.5 years). It examined whether the ECR-RS for children could be assumed to be based on 2 factors (attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance). We verified its reliability with tests of internal consistency and test–retest correlation at 5 months, and examined its validity with theoretically related or unrelated variables (attachment security, global self-esteem, emotional intelligence, empathy, life satisfaction, social anxiousness, loneliness, friendship satisfaction, and athletic competence). The results generally supported our predictions. In sum, the ECR-RS for children appears to have adequate psychometric properties of validity and reliability.
