    This study aims to establish a residual axial force evaluation method for corrosion-induced thinning patterns of high-strength bolts occurring in actual bridges. Experiments were conducted on the thinning of nuts and bolt heads of high-strength bolts using lectrochemical reactions. The experimental results indicate that the range of corrosion-induced thinning in the nut and bolt head that significantly affects the reduction in bolt axial force is 4 mm in height from the respective washer. Based on this, a method for evaluating residual axial forces is proposed.

  • Effect of corrosion thinning around the outermost bolt row on the slip resistance of splice plate in high-strength bolted friction joints

    In high-strength bolted friction joints, a diagram has been proposed to estimate slip resistance based on splice plate thickness reduction. However, considering the load transfer mechanism, the effect of corrosion varies with the bolt-row position. In particular, reduction around bolts in the outermost row, where corrosion tends to progress, is critical to investigate. This study investigates the relationship between plate reduction at each bolt row and slip resistance using finite element analysis. The results indicate that thickness reduction around the outermost bolts has only a minor effect on slip resistance, suggesting that the joint capacity is less sensitive to localized corrosion at these positions.

    This study analyzed adherent rust remaining on steel members using Raman spectroscopy and identified magnetite as the primary component, with localized β-FeOOH near the steel surface. When a CS coating was applied over the rust, it demonstrated corrosion resistance comparable to hot-dip galvanizing for up to 160 cycles, and the zinc in the coating was expected to provide electrochemical protection to the steel substrate through anodic reaction.

    The ends of steel bridge girders are prone to significant corrosion at an early stage, and the development of highly durable anti-corrosion technology is necessary to ensure safety and security. To address this issue, the authors developed a corrosion repair technology using cold spray technology and conducted test applications on the girder ends of actual bridges where corrosion damage had occurred. In this paper, through continuous observation of the corrosion environment of actual girder ends over a 100-month period, the authors focused on the edges, which are weak points in painting, and demonstrated the long-term corrosion resistance of cold spray corrosion protection technology. As a result, it was proven that even on component edges where rust remained after simple surface preparation, a high-purity zinc coating could be applied and adhere to the surface during onsite construction, ensuring long-term corrosion resistance even in environments where corrosion is likely to occur, such as at the ends of girders.

    Fatigue crack is one of the main damages of steel bridges. In general, surface coating cracks in welded joints are removed and magnetic particle test is performed on areas where fatigue cracks are suspected. However, if magnetic particle test is performed on all surface coating cracks, the inspection costs will increase. Therefore, there is a demand for technology that can detect fatigue cracks without removing the surface coatings. In this study, we investigated the eddy current testing to the detection of fatigue cracks in welded joints from surface coatings, and methods to improve the detection performance and accuracy.
