    Cytological observation was conducted for the first time on Japanese Antrophyum (Pteridaceae), namely A. obovatum and A. formosanum. The chromosome numbers of the two species were counted as 2n = 240 for the former and 2n = ca. 240 for the latter. Considering the basic chromosome number is x = 30, they are considered as octoploid species. The chromosome numbers, 2n = 240, are first reported for them. Our study demonstrated the pervasiveness of polyploidy in the genus.

    An alien plant, Melothria pendula L., native to northeastern to southern parts of the U.S.A. and Central and South America, was found growing on the side of a farm road in the northern part of Iriomotejima Island, Okinawa, Japan. Since this species may cover other plants and inhibit their growth, it is necessary to monitor its distribution on the island.
