Abstract A new genus and species of lysiosquilloid mantis shrimp is described from Australia and Japan. It is unique in Stomatopoda by its unusual telson ornamentation in which the short intermediate and lateral primary teeth, accompanied by a row of short, graded serrations inward of the intermediate teeth, partially overhang a row of minute submarginal denticles. Although distinctive as a new genus and species, Incertasquilla chimeragen. et sp. nov. does not fit clearly into existing lysiosquilloid families as currently diagnosed and, in some respects, shares a mosaic of features present in several families. Incertasquilla chimeragen. et sp. nov., however, currently fits best into Tetrasquillidae, where it is tentatively placed, although further phylogenetic study may show it belongs in a separate family altogether. In the light of the new character combinations presented by the discovery of Incertasquilla chimeragen. et sp. nov., a revised diagnosis for Tetrasquillidae and updated key to the genera are provided. The discovery of Incertasquilla chimeragen. et sp. nov. expands the described lysiosquilloid fauna to 14 genera and 30 species in Australia, and 10 and 16 in Japan, respectively.

<p>A single specimen of gecarcinid crab, <i>Discoplax gracilipes</i> Ng and Guinot, 2001, was collected from an anchialine pool in a cave on Hateruma Island, southern Ryukyu Archipelago, southwestern Japan. This species was previously known only from the central Philippines. The present specimen represents the first record of the species from Japan, extending its distributional range to about 1400 km northward. Additionally, the fauna of the cave on Hateruma Island briefly noted. A key to the Japanese species of the family Gecarcinidae is provided.</p>

<p>Freshwater crabs of the genus <i>Geothelphusa</i> Stimpson, 1858 were collected from a river on Oshima Peninsula, Hokkaido, northern Japan. They were identified as <i>Geothelphusa dehaani</i> (White, 1847) based mainly on structures of the carapace and the male first gonopods. In the study river, <i>G. dehaani</i> occurred in the upper reach of the main stream and in several tributaries but was not found in the middle reach. The presence of brooding females and many immature individuals suggests that the <i>G. dehaani</i> population is established in the river.</p>

<p>Four mantis shrimp species are recorded from the Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, southern Japan: <i>Gonodactylaceus ternatensis</i> (De Man, 1902) (Gonodactylidae); <i>Lysiosquilloides siamensis</i> (Naiyanetr, 1980) (Lysiosquillidae); <i>Alimopsoides tuberculatus</i> Moosa, 1991 (Squillidae); and <i>Busquilla plantei</i> Manning, 1978 (Squillidae). This is the first specimen-based record of <i>G. ternatensis</i> and the first distributional records of the latter three species from Japan. The genus <i>Lysiosquilloides</i> Manning, 1977 is recorded for the first time from Japanese waters, and the genus <i>Alimopsoides</i> Moosa, 1991 is newly found from the northern hemisphere. Diagnoses, taxonomic remarks, ecological notes and new standard Japanese names are provided.</p>
