<p>A new species of swimming crab of the genus <i>Catoptrus</i> A. Milne-Edwards, 1870 (Portunidae) is described from Kagoshima, southern Japan. <i>Catoptrus lavicolus</i> <b>n. sp.</b> was collected from deep inside large lava rocks at shallow subtidal bed of Sakurajima, an active volcano. The new species differs from all seven congeners by a combination of the characters of the carapace, chelipeds and ambulatory legs. Intersex specimens of <i>C. lavicolus</i> <b>n. sp.</b> were observed in this study, while no male specimen has been collected.</p>

The geochemistry of the calcium carbonates of marine organisms is an excellent proxy for reconstruction of the paleoceanographic history. However, previous studies of hypercalcified demosponges (sclerosponges) are considerably fewer than those of corals, foraminifers, and bivalves. Here, we investigated stable oxygen (delta O-18) and carbon (delta C-13) isotopes and minor and trace element (Mg, Sr, Ba, Pb, and U) to Ca ratios of 36 living sclerosponges (Astrosclera willeyana) collected from Kume Island in the Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan, to evaluate the utility of geochemistry as a paleoenvironmental proxy. The delta O-18, delta C-13, and Sr/Ca deviations of the coevally precipitated skeleton were extremely small and almost constant at all skeletal portions, strongly suggesting that within-skeletal variations in the chemical components are negligibly small for non-symbiotic sclerosponges. Mean delta O-18, delta C-13, and Sr/Ca values (N = 36), falling within a quite narrow range, showed no significant evidence for intraspecific (inter-specimen) variations in the sclerosponges. The sclerosponges delta O-18 and delta C-13 were consistent with those of the aragonites precipitated in isotopic equilibrium with seawater at the growth site. The sclerosponge Sr/Ca was close to that of inorganically precipitated aragonite, and the estimated partition coefficient of 1.1 (almost unity) is identical to previously reported values for different species (Ceratoporella nicholsoni). Consequently, these results suggest that A. willeyana sclerosponge, having little vital effects on the geochemistry, is a robust indicator of paleocean environments (seawater delta O-18, temperature, and dissolved inorganic carbon delta C-13). Further, our evaluation study documents that sclerosponges living in deeper ocean environments can support the reconstruction of spatial and vertical paleoceanographic changes in conjunction with coral proxy records. The sclerosponge U/Ca showed little within-skeletal and intraspecific variations, but the heterogeneity and individual difference of the Mg/Ca, Ba/Ca, and Pb/Ca were relatively large, the reasons of which still remain unresolved.

<p>We describe <i>Parakonarus kajii</i> sp. nov. from near Iriomote Island, Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan. This is the first record of <i>Parakonarus</i> from the North Pacific. As members in this genus show great sexual dimorphism, we checked our male and female specimens for conspecificity by using partial sequences of the cytochrome <i>c</i> oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. The two individuals differed by two nucleotide substitutions in 661 nt (0.3% K2P distance), indicating they are the same species. This species closely resembles <i>P. kopure</i> reported from New Zealand, but differs in having the ventral process on the chelipedal carpus longer than wide, the inner comb-row on the chelipedal propodus composed of 16 setae, and the dactylus and unguis of pereopods 4–6 fused in the male; and the carpi of pereopods 2 and 3 without a ventrodistal spiniform seta, the propodal palm of the cheliped with two inner simple setae at the insertion of the dactylus, and article 2 of the maxillipedal palp with one mid-outer and one outer distal simple setae in the female. On the inner surface of the chelipeds in male <i>P. kajii</i>, we observed an elongate plate-like structure that could be a reduced ischium.</p>
