    ポストプランテーションと観光ブーム社会において，島嶼コミュニティにおける在来作物を活用した農業生産の多様性を明らかにするため，ハワイ州カウアイ島にて現地調査を実施した．具体的には，プランテーション跡地を利用した農作物の生産と加工，ならびに在来作物と観光開発との関連について流通の現状と課題を分析した．1800 年代初頭のサトウキビ農園は，砂糖価格の下落や政府による補助金廃止によってコーヒー農園，小規模コーヒー農園，カカオ農園などに取って代わっていた．カウアイ島での農業の課題は，後継者不足，大雨による被害，熱帯果樹の野鳥被害などがあり，また，後継者不足から肉用牛生産や養鶏などの畜産業が減少していた．観光業は，島の主要な産業として多くの労働力を集める一方で，地価を押し上げ，間接的にはカウアイ島での農業の後継者不足を招いていた．カウアイ島には，田んぼにサトイモ畑を復活させる取り組みがあり，伝統的な作物や食文化の継承のほか，サトイモ畑によって農村の自然環境や湿田に飛来する野鳥の保護にも繋がり，観光業にも貢献していた．ポイと呼ばれるタロイモをすりつぶした伝統的なロコ料理は，その原材料の加工に手間を要することから，料理の前段階まで処理して加工販売する流通加工業者があった．小規模農家が生産する野菜や熱帯果樹の種類は多く，また，地元の農産物をファーマーズ・マーケットで販売する行政の支援は，島の食料安全保障の強化に効果的だった．ゴーファーム・ハワイ・プロジェクトは，農業後継者の減少を克服するために新しい商業農家を育成するために実施されていたが，カウアイ島の小規模農家は，マーケティング力に大きな差があった．インターネットの普及によって，小規模農家の特別な農産物に対する新たな販売促進が可能となった．オンラインで直接注文を受け，オンラインで新しい技術を学び，パッケージデザインのために大陸企業と協力した販売が可能であった．島嶼地域における小規模農家の生産技術とマーケティング力を向上させるためには，学識経験者や政府などのマルチ・ステークホルダーからの支援が不可欠であり，複数の販売チャネルを有すること，幅広い作物や熱帯果樹を育てること，伝統的な在来作物の復活などは，カウアイ島の食料安全保障を効果的に強化できると考えられた．
