     View Summary

In megacities around the world, atmospheric environmental problems are being addressed in both developed and developing countries.Among them, even Tokyo, which is one of the most regulated megacities, has not been able to solve the atmospheric environmental problem of photochemical oxidants (ozone). In this study, we changed the "reaction field" of VOCs generated by photolysis of organic aerosol from the atmosphere to paved roads, instead of the overlooked "source" of VOCs required for ozone generation. As a result, it was discovered that the organic aerosol deposited on the paved road was photodecomposed to release VOCs. VOC emissions were high, and it was found that the current simulation model underestimated VOC emissions by more than three times.

Dust emitted from factories and particulate matter (Particulate Matter; PM) contained in diesel exhaust, especially fine particles with a particle size of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5), cause asthma when exposed to living organisms. It is known to be at risk of exacerbation of bronchitis. In recent years, the effects of nanoparticles (PM0.1) with a particle size of 0.1 μm or less on living organisms have been attracting attention, but their role in asthma exacerbation and intractability is unknown. From this study, it was suggested that PM0.1 in central Tokyo may not be involved in worsening asthma or steroid resistance, but the component analysis of PM0.1 used this time, the route of administration of PM0.1, and the dose need further study.

     View Summary

It is usual understanding that rainfall removes aerosols from the air. However, the question of whether rain plays a role in releasing aerosols to the air has been posed recently. In the present study, we found outbreak of radioCs-bearing aerosols in a contaminated Japanese forest due to rain. We carried out general radioactive aerosol observations in a typical mountainous village area within the exclusion zone in Fukushima. We also sampled according to the weather (rain or fine) inside a forest to better understand the process. Thus, we know that rain enhances/induces bursts of radioCs-bearing aerosols in forests. With further investigations, we confirmed that the fungal spore sources in the rainy weather seem to be different from those in the fine weather. Larger fungal particles (possibly conidia-ascospore) are emitted during rain than during fine weather, suggesting that the rain-splash mechanism for mold-like fungi could be the major mechanism.
